Hiking – observing – feeling and experiencing history – this is the motto that the archeological trail starts with in the narrow and shadowy alleys of Stufels. The oldest part of the city of Brixen was already a settlement for Stone Age hunters and gatherers. An extraordinary hike brimful of archeological highlights awaits us: constantly uphill, passing by mystical cupstones to the Roman tower, a historic defensive building and a wonderful panoramic view. Further on, on Roman trails through sunny hills, crossing warriors’ carts and the witches’ chute, the path leads us back to the bishop’s city.

Walking time: 2.5 hours, length: 6 km, elevation gain: 300m

Guided half-day tour: “On the tracks of archeology in Brixen”, on Thursday 2nd, 16th and 30th May, 20th June and 24th October 2013 – departure: 10 am. Reservation required at the tourist office Brixen within 4 pm of the eve, tel. +39 0472 836401

Next Sunday, on 14th April, in Brixen people celebrate Saint Cassian’s Sunday. Saint Cassian is the patron saint of the diocese and according to a legend he was the first bishop of Säben and herald of the gospel. He is supposed to have been killed by his pagan students who tortured him to death with their writing utensils as he often proclaimed the message of the gospel during his grammar lessons. In 1704, a relic of his arm was brought to the Cathedral of Brixen. Saint Cassian should protect the city from destruction and harm done by foreign troops. From then on, a procession in his honour is celebrated every year and it is renowned even outside town as many believers from every corner of the province to take part in it.

At 9 am, the festive service with the diocesan bishop begins, followed, at 10 am, by the church parade with the holy relics through the alleys of the city, accompanied by the bands of Brixen and surroundings. The procession ends on Cathedral Square with the hymn of the diocesan patrons and the blessing by the bishop.

Here in Brixen, actually all over South Tyrol, there are numerous Easter traditions which are an important part of the Tyrolean customs. Like the one on Palm Sunday: the one who gets up the last, is the palm donkey. On this day, the palm branches are blessed. They will then be burnt in the oven during the year in case of thunderstorms. The Easter eggs are traditionally coloured on Holy Thursday and are then “pecked” on Easter Sunday and Monday. Children as well as adults take each an egg, first both pointed sides, then the round ones are pecked against each others. The one whose egg does not break is the winner. On Holy Saturday the blessing of the traditional Easter food takes place. It is taken to church in a special basket. The blessed dishes will then be served the following day at lunch. Especially children are looking forward to this day… Where will the Easter bunny have hidden the Easter nest with all its sweet treats?
